Xiamen University was founded in 1921, by Mr. Tan Kah Kee, an overseas Chinese philanthropist who put forth the motto Pursue Excellence, Strive for Perfection. It is among the top research universities directly affiliated to the Chinese Ministry of Education. The university currently has a faculty of over 2,500 full-time teachers and researchers. It consists of 6 faculties, i.e. Natural Science, Medicine and Life Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Earth Science, Humanities and Arts, and Social Sciences. The university hosts over 20,000 full-time undergraduate students (including 1,700 international students), and 3,000 doctoral candidates and 17,000 master's degree students. Xiamen University has earned its excellence of research with its Nature Publishing Index of among the top 10 in China.
XMU has forged partnerships with more than 300 universities worldwide. It has established 16 Confucius Institutes in collaboration with local universities in 13 countries.

A weekly, international journal, publishing papers from any area of science with great potential impact and whose importance extends well beyond the confines of the specific discipline concerned. Launching in 2019, Nature Metabolism is an online-only journal publishing content across the full spectrum of metabolism research, from basic science studies to biomedical and translational research. It will publish studies - conducted at the cellular, tissue or organismal level - that advance our understanding of metabolic and homeostatic processes in physiology and disease.
